John Gong

John Gong is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), located in Beijing, PR. China, where he teaches and researches in areas of microeconomics, industrial organization, and antitrust and regulatory economics.
 
Dr. Gong has a wide range of academic and industry experience both in the US and China. He is a prolific researcher and writer with a list of publications in leading international academic journals in fields of both economics and electrical engineering. He is also a regular op-ed columnist for the South China Morning Post (in Hong Kong) and the Global Times (in China), writing extensively on economic and political issues. Dr. Gong currently serves as the executive editor of the Journal of Chinese Economic and Foreign Trade Studies (JCEFTS) published in the UK.
 
Dr. Gong is one of the recognized antitrust authorities among the economics community in China. He serves as an expert consultant with the Ministry of Commerce’s (MOFCOM) Antitrust Bureau, having acted as the chief architect of the Bureau’s national competition database. He was recently hired by the Bureau to review antitrust filings of several high profile merger applications by multinational companies that filed simultaneously with the US, EU, and China competition authorities.
 
Prior to joining UIBE in 2009, Dr. Gong had a research career with Bell Communications Research and Cable Television Laboratories Inc. (CableLabs) in the US for 15 years. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Ph.D. in Economics in 1995.
